The biggest container in general circulation, reserved for sites with commercial clearance and volume that arrives faster than any smaller box could absorb.
Forty yards is a great deal of container and the list of jobs that genuinely need it is shorter than people assume. Commercial decommissioning, warehouse reorganisation, large scale office.
From the detail belowForty yards is a great deal of container and the list of jobs that genuinely need it is shorter than people assume. Commercial decommissioning, warehouse reorganisation, large scale office strip out, industrial clearance and major new build framing phases all qualify, because each produces bulky material at a rate that overwhelms smaller boxes.
What disqualifies a job is density rather than scale. Anything approaching a ton per cubic yard is out, which rules out concrete, brick, soil, tile and asphalt entirely. A forty carrying rubble would exceed legal transport weight before it was a quarter full, so the size is defined by the material profile rather than by the size of the project.
A forty yard container runs beyond twenty two feet with side walls around eight feet high, and the truck delivering it needs everything a smaller roll off needs with none of the margin. Sixty feet of straight approach, twelve feet of clear width and twenty three feet of vertical clearance remain the working figures, and on a constrained site each of them becomes a genuine constraint rather than a formality.
That is why placement for this size is established before the booking is confirmed. A wasted delivery on a forty costs a full truck cycle out of a day of Sheldon, IL routing, which affects every other address on that board. Commercial yards, industrial units and open sites generally accommodate it. Residential drives rarely do.
Where a site can physically take a forty, the comparison against multiple smaller containers is usually favourable. One delivery and one collection replace two of each, which removes a full truck movement from the job and the cost that goes with it. Cost per cubic yard also falls as container size rises.
The comparison reverses on any site where the forty would be a struggle. A box that needs a relocation charge, a permit that a smaller container would not need, or a placement that blocks an operational route is not the cheaper option regardless of the rate card. On constrained sites two twenties on a planned swap rhythm remains the sensible arrangement.
High side walls change how a forty is loaded. Lifting material over an eight foot wall is impractical, so the barn door end effectively becomes the only workable entry point and its orientation matters more here than on any other size. Mark the ground before delivery and the box goes down facing the work.
Weight distribution also needs attention. Heavier items belong spread across the floor rather than concentrated at one end, because a nose heavy forty is difficult to winch and can shift in transit. The rail line remains an absolute limit. Nothing may sit above it, and on a container this tall that is a limit crews reach less often but breach more dramatically when they do.
Step up in capacity when the volume proves larger than the first estimate suggested.
Small Dumpster RentalA different material profile entirely, and a common second container on the same job.
Recycling Dumpster RentalWhere access rather than volume becomes the deciding constraint on the placement.
Mini Dumpster RentalThe separated stream option that reaches a cheaper gate when the load stays clean.
